The lesson we learn here is that humans are capable of astounding abstraction in their speech and thinking, and are able to structure seemingly nonsensical or even impossible utterances in such a way that they somehow make sense to us. And yet, we constantly find ourselves at odds in society because we fail to rise above our own concrete perception of the world around us and the situations that we and others find ourselves in. In considering this failure on our part as a society - given how easily we abstract when we need to in our everyday speech - the lesson I would like to take away from this is that I should make more of an effort to step out of my own shoes and try to see things from other perspectives before I leap to judgement. Therefore, my New Year's resolution is to make a concerted effort to better try to understand others' perspectives moving forward.
