I have a conflicted relationship with this meme. On the one hand, I love it, because super long compound nouns are one of the most fun things about the German language (the sign advertises a business that rents floor polishing machines). On the other hand, of course Germans play Scrabble!

If you enjoy busting language myths as much as I do, get the German-speaking (or non-German-speaking, if you feel like being passive-aggressive) gift recipients on your list a copy of German Scrabble.

A word to the wise, though. As I learned the hard way by playing this game with my intermediate students a few years back, a bigger vocabulary isn’t necessarily better. Like in the English version of the game, the smaller words are where it’s at.
